The vocabulary of the desk, defined in one or two sentences each.
Altcoin
MarketsAny cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Ethereum, Solana and BNB are large-cap altcoins.
ATH / ATL
MarketsAll-time high / all-time low — the highest and lowest price an asset has ever traded at.
Bear market
MarketsA sustained downtrend, typically a drawdown of 20% or more from recent highs with negative sentiment.
Bull market
MarketsA sustained uptrend with rising prices and broadly optimistic sentiment.
Candlestick
ChartsA bar showing open, high, low and close for a time period. Body = open→close, wicks = high/low.
Dominance
MarketsOne asset's share of total crypto market cap. Bitcoin dominance is a common risk-appetite gauge.
Fear & Greed Index
SentimentA 0–100 composite of volatility, momentum, social and dominance data. Low = fear, high = greed.
Funding rate
DerivativesPeriodic payment between long and short perpetual-futures holders that keeps the contract near spot.
Gas
On-chainThe fee paid to execute a transaction or contract on a network like Ethereum.
Halving
BitcoinA scheduled event every ~4 years that cuts the Bitcoin block reward in half, slowing new supply.
Hashrate
MiningTotal computing power securing a proof-of-work network, measured in hashes per second (e.g. EH/s).
Liquidation
DerivativesForced closure of a leveraged position when its margin can no longer cover losses.
Liquidity
MarketsHow easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving its price. Deep order books = high liquidity.
Market cap
MarketsPrice × circulating supply. A rough measure of an asset's size, not its cash value.
Open interest
DerivativesTotal value of outstanding derivative contracts. Rising OI with rising price signals new longs.
Resistance
ChartsA price zone where selling has repeatedly stalled advances.
SIP
InvestingSystematic Investment Plan — buying a fixed amount at fixed intervals regardless of price (dollar-cost averaging).
Slippage
TradingThe gap between the price you expected and the price you got, usually from thin liquidity.
Sparkline
ChartsA tiny, axis-free line chart that shows the shape of recent price action at a glance.
Stablecoin
MarketsA token pegged to a fiat currency such as USD (USDT, USDC, DAI).
Support
ChartsA price zone where buying has repeatedly halted declines.
TVL
DeFiTotal Value Locked — the value of assets deposited in a DeFi protocol.
Volume (24h)
MarketsTotal value traded in the last 24 hours across tracked exchanges. Confirms or questions a move.
Whale
On-chainA wallet large enough to move the market with a single order.
